Success in College
1. Learning how to get new skills — You should learn how to stuty successfully and the ways you learn best. Many colleges provide at least a single college success course that can educate you these skills. Such courses should be taught to school students, though few schools provide them. Good college success courses will educate you how to study, some reading comprehension strategies, the best styles of learning as well as types of intelligences, set and reach the goals, discovery of your strengths and talents, time management, career exploration, note taking, writing skills, problem solving, and others.
2. Work ethic — Successful study and work habits lead to success in education and in the work force. Excellent study skills will be effective in case you apply them. But they will be useless to you when you do not employ them.
3. Motivation — Without it you will not use greatly your study skills, work habits, intelligence and potential. Actually, there are two motivation types, the carrot and the stick. When you employ both of them, then you will obtain a powerful motivational mixture. You should keep your long-range aims for achieving an education success in your mind’s eye. For instance, you would like to become a teacher. Picture yourself a teacher who makes a positive difference for the students. Delight the positive feelings coming when you image yourself as a fruitful teacher. It is the carrot plus a reminder of benefits (pleasure) that you will experience when achieving your goal.
